The world-renowned South-Central University for Nationalities Art Troupe is making a special stop on their U.S. Autumn Tour at the Bailey Center (Kennesaw State University) on Oct. 13, 2018 (Sat.). Confucius Institute KSU is honored to host the cultural performance which will undoubtedly dazzle the audience with a variety of traditional folk music and dances of China’s different ethnic minority groups.

1.民族大联舞《多彩中华》
Chinese Folk Dance: Colorful China
Chinese nation, consisting of 56 ethnic groups, is a united and unified family. It has a longstanding, rich and varied dancing culture. Today, we are here to extend to you the blessings from the people of all 56 ethnic groups in China. We bring you the clear water flowed from the Snow Mountain, the hada of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the snowflakes of the Changbai Mountain and the most beautiful flowers.
2. 马头琴独奏《万马奔腾》《蒙古人》
Morin khuur Solo: Ten Thousand Horses Galloping Ahead, The Mongolian People
The Mongolian ethnic group is one of the nomadic groups in China, and is also called “the ethnic group on horseback”. The labor, production, life and amusement of the Mongolian people are closely related with horses. Among all of the Mongolian musical instruments, the most representative one is a bowed stringed instrument with a scroll carved like a horse’s head - the morin khuur, also known as the horsehead fiddle.
3. 傣族女子群舞《花腰小摆》
Female Group Dance of Dai Ethnic Group: Huayao Dance
The Dai ethnic group is distributed in the southern part of Yunnan Province. The Dai people are very good at taking in the culture essence of neighboring ethnic groups and countries and integrating into their own traditional culture and arts. After long periods of development, they have formed their unique dancing styles and characteristics. The movements of Huayao Dance are not only beautiful and graceful, but full of internal firmness and national strength.
4. 武术
Martial Arts Performance
Chinese martial arts are the indispensable and integral part of Chinese traditional culture. They are the long-time accumulation and reflection of Chinese traditional culture. The style and characteristic of martial arts performance and its connection with “manner”, “spirit” and “rhythm” pays attention to combination of virtuality and reality.
5. 哈萨克族群舞《石人与天鹅》
The Kazakh Group Dance: Stone Man and Swan
The Kazakh ethnic group is one of China’s ancient ethnic groups who live in the Autonomous Region of Xinjiang-Uyghur. Nowadays, the Kazakh people still talk about the legend of the swan. The dance Stone Man and Swan is about a holy and pure swan floating down on a stone man who has been sleeping for a thousand years and awakening the stone man to life with its white feather. This dance expresses people’s longing for free and enthusiastic life.
6. 琵琶独奏《瀛洲古调》《歌舞引》
Pipa Solo: Ancient Melody of Yingzhou; Quotes of Song and Dance
Pipa, a four-stringed Chinese musical instrument which has been played for over two thousand years in China, is regarded as “the king of plucked string instruments”. Pipa enjoys its unique artistic style due to its wide range of tone, rich playing techniques and variable timbre.
7. 维吾尔族女子群舞《长长的辫子》
The Uygur Ethnic Group Female Group Dance: Long Braids
This dance conveys that the Uygur girls regard their long braids as the most precious and beautiful gifts they received from their mother. They take their long braids in their hands and sing the song handed down generation from generation to express their happiness and pleasure.
8. 川剧变脸
Face-Changing in Sichuan Opera
The art of face-changing is an important part of the Sichuan Opera performance, a romantic way of expressing the inner thinking of the characters, as well as the quintessence of Chinese culture due to its strong ethnic feature.
9. 蒙古族男子三人舞《心中的草原》
The Mongolian Male Pas de Trois: Grassland in the Heart
The morin khuur performance must have left a deep impression on you. The next performance is a male pas de trios performed by three Mongolian boys. The dance presents Mongolian’s affection to the grassland through the enthusiastic movements.
10.独唱《在希望的田野上》《我在茶乡等你来》
Solo: On the Land of Hope; I am Waiting for You in the Homeland of Tea.
The first one is On the Land of Hope. Its melody is graceful and lively. Its tune is fluent. Its content is pleasantly simple and genuine. It expresses people’s praise of beautiful life.
The second one is I am Waiting for You in the Homeland of Tea, a folk song of China’s Tujia ethnic group. It has very cheerful rhythm and expresses the hard-working, unpretentious, enthusiastic and hospitable characters of the Tujia people.
11.藏族男女群舞《安多则柔》
Tibetan Group Dance: Amdo Ze Rou
Amdo Tibetans is one of the branches of the Tibetan ethnic group. Amdo Tibetan males are tall and strong, while the females are diligent and virtuous. Ze Rou is one of the most representative dances performed when the Amdo males and females are playing together. The dance is very humorous and expresses the young people’s longing for a beautiful romance life.
12.尾声互动节目《锅庄》
Interactive Program: Tibetan Guozhuang Dance
Guozhuang is one of Tibet’s three folk dances. In Tibetan language, Guozhuang means circle dance. During festivals or farm slack seasons, the Tibetan people dance and sing from right to left in a round.
