Chinese Painting and Calligraphy in Contemporary Society:
Lecture and Demonstration

What inspires an artist in creating works of traditional style in today's China? What are the challenges?†What are the connections between painting and calligraphy? How to appreciate works with both components? In this talk, renowned artist Mr. Zhang Jingyao will discuss these and other issues based on his experience as a working artist in China. He will also demonstrate his painting and calligraphy skills and showcase recent works.
Born in 1945 and growing up by the Yellow River, Mr. Zhang uses a distinctive visual language in his colored landscape paintings. Besides being a highly accomplished artist, he is also an expert in Daoist philosophy. He is currently a Visiting Professor at the Daoism Research Institute of Shandong University and Shandong Academy of Fine Arts, and a senior member of the National Association of Painters†Shandong Conference. He has lectured at Peking University and Tsinghua University, among other institutions.
