Dr. Lin, a 33 year-old pulmonary physician, was recently diagnosed with leukemia, which is a life-threatening cancer of the bone marrow stem cells. Many patients like Dr. Lin, bone marrow transplant may be the only cure for their leukemia. For patients who do not have a matching donor in the family, they are relying on Be The Match Registry to find a donor with the same HLA tissue-typing within their own ethnic ancestry. Please take a few minutes to sign up. A cheek swab is all it takes to potentially save a life.

The test only requires a cotton swab brushed against the inside of your cheek.

The cost of adding a person to the marrow registry is $100. However, Be The Match does not charge anyone to join the registry. Be The Match relies on voluntary contributions to help add more potential donors to the registry. Every $100 raised adds one new member to the registry.

六、七年前，女儿同学的父亲得了白血病，医生在现有的骨髓库找不到match。于是，New Prospect Elementary 与 National Marrow Donor Program 联系, 定下后者来学校采血的日子，并号召家长参加活动，以便找到match。<div><br></div><div>虽然患者是白人，我的骨髓match 上的可能性很小，但我还是去了。因为学校告诉我们，即使match不上，我们的信息会被储存下来。全美国治疗白血病的医生都可以access这些信息。我填了几个表，被问了很多问题，之后就是抽血。</div><div><br></div><div>从那以后，我每年都收到email，让我更新情况。比如，我这一年是否得了什么病令我不能再捐献骨髓, 我是否搬了家等等。</div><div><br></div><div>我不记得有关compensation事，也没问。当时只想着也许我的骨髓将来能救一命。华人在美国找到骨髓match比较难，我们多点人报名，病人的希望就大点。</div><div><br></div><div><br></div>
