Tourist drowns in Lake Allatoona
Divers recovered the body of a 41-year-old vacationing New York man who drowned after jumping off a boat into the waters of Lake Allatoona, according to Tim Cavender, spokesman for Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services.Cavender said Darren Smith of West Babylon, N.Y., jumped into 18 feet of water to go for a swim Sunday afternoon Moments later, his friends noticed he was struggling, Cavender said.
"They jumped in to try to rescue him and they couldn’t get him," Cavender told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I don’t know if he started cramping or what was involved. He had some difficulty. They couldn't locate him. And they called us about 2:20."
Members of the Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services Dive Team found Smith's body near a Boy Scout camp on Kellogg Creek Road in Cherokee County around 4 p.m. Sunday.
Cavender noted that Tuesday would have been Smith's 42nd birthday.
