Annual Malaysian Festival Celebrates
Culture, Conservation and Community
This Year’s Event to be Held at Zoo Atlanta; Ticketed Event Open to Public;
Highlights Unique and Exciting Activities for the Whole Family
Atlanta, GA – August 3, 2009 – To mark the annual celebration of Malaysia’s Independence Day in
August, the Malaysian Association of Georgia (MAG) will host its annual Malaysia Fest at Zoo Atlanta
on Saturday August 15, 2009 from 10 am – 8:30 pm. This year’s festival, Malaysia Fest: Adventure at
Zoo Atlanta, highlights the exciting opportunity of being hosted at Zoo Atlanta, and will include
opportunities to view unique Southeast Asian wildlife exhibited at the Zoo. This year’s festival is also a
‘green’ / environment-friendly event, featuring wildlife conservation efforts, recycling and low-carbon
initiatives by Zoo Atlanta and MAG members.
“Our members enjoy events that involve the whole family, so we are very excited about having our annual
festival this year at Zoo Atlanta,” said Boh-Ying Leong, president of MAG. “As we began to plan this
year’s festival, we realized we have a great opportunity to showcase an aspect of Malaysia that isn’t
typically highlighted: our beautiful tropical environment and the wildlife that is unique only to our part of
the world. Zoo Atlanta is the perfect place for our Malaysian families to reconnect with home, as well as
for those unfamiliar with Malaysia’s green nature to learn more, without even leaving the city. The green
focus is important because it goes hand in hand with protecting our wildlife and the environment.”
The festival will be comprised of two main portions:
Day Time Zoo Adventure (10 am – 5 pm): featuring Southeast Asian wildlife exhibits, instructorled
children’s painting activities and exhibition by Sabah Kinder Art, interactive cultural
demonstrations, conservation tips and activities, food, crafts and information vendors, and official
opening ceremonies at 3 pm
Panda Veranda Evening Festivities ( 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm): buffet dinner featuring Malaysianinspired
cuisine prepared by leading ethnic restaurants in Atlanta, a recreation of Malaysia’s
famous Night Market “pasar malam”, and exclusive panda viewing and talk by Zoo Atlanta staff
In observance of this year’s green focus, recycling bins will be placed throughout the Zoo to collect
recyclable material. The buffet dinner is earth-friendly, low-carbon impact and completely vegetarian,
served with recyclable cutleries and paper products. The entire event will be run with minimal use of nonrecyclable
materials such as plastic.

“Each year, MAG officers and an extended group of volunteers work hard to come up with an exciting
event built on fresh ideas that goes beyond a simple cultural awareness opportunity,” said Pek-Suan
Yew-Wyland, vice-president of MAG. “We strive to deliver unique programs, and the resulting events
have now become a day of cultural immersion for our members and guests. With this year’s green focus
and showcasing some of our country’s beautiful wildlife right here at Zoo Atlanta, I believe we’re one of
the first community organizations in Atlanta to make our festival as environmentally conscious as
possible. This very essence of thinking outside the box to bring exciting and unique events to our
members and the community at large speaks very well of our Malaysia Boleh (can-do) spirit.”
The festival is open to the public and is a ticketed event. Festival ticket details and online sales can be
found at www.malaysia-ga.org. Zoo Atlanta is open to the public at regular hours during the festival.
