I am a senior student at the LIU Shaolin Institute school in Mobile, Alabama. For 15 years I have witnessed many children and adults in our community regain their health, wellness, and spirit under the care and love of Shifu (Grand Master Shi Deru) These recoveries range from cancer remission, spinal cord injury recovery, obesity, chronic pain, various addictions, fear, anger, depression, shifts in unhealthy character traits, such as thieves and gangs. Master Shi Deru has been called upon to assist many victims of abuse and trauma in our community.

He raised money for Katrina victims, spent many weeks in New Orleans assisting with stress of their citizens and public servans. I witnessed Shifu consoling a child who was so frightened by Katrina seeing dead bodies and his dead dog. I have seen children with little self esteem come to our school with their little heads and shoulders down and in several months their heads and shoulders raised high with big smiles.

I have seen senior citizens come to the school as their children sent them in hopes they could regain a purposeful life again. I again witnessed an elderly woman very sad about her life with no hope or joy and Shifu beginning a program for her in Tai Ji and teaching her to breathe again. In several months this woman had hope and vest in life. She told Shifu that she had always dreamed of traveling to Germany to visit family and felt that she now had the energy to go but no funds to do it. Shifu bought her ticket to Germany. I have watched time and time again Shifu sacrifice to give to others.

All students watching Shifu and seeing the integrity, humbleness, giving nature and always being able to see the best and potential in all of us and everyone he meets, we who now assist these schools try to always carry this character of Shaolin spirit. Strong character for a better society.

I initially came to the Shaolin school over 15 years ago with a serious injury requiring controversial surgery. Three top western medical doctors gave me no other alternative. A friend told me about a Chinese medicine doctor who had just moved to Mobile. Contact was made. Shifu first got me out of chronic pain, then taught me to breathe again properly. I started Tai Ji, Qi Gong and as healing began, Shifu gradually helped me get off of nine medications. As time progressed my injury had healed with no invasion to my body. Shifu helped me with better nutrition and soon I lost 25 lbs. I am now 67 years old and still on no medication. Healthier than when I was younger. Continuing to practice meditation, Qi Gong, Tai Ji and sometimes a little cardio sanshou. We are grateful in our community for Shaolin dignity.

-Susan Chan
Has Shaolin Institute made money? Yes, it has. It is the Shaolin Institute’s
policy to support the people living in the communities at campus locations by
using the Institute’s financial resources and elite access in international
relationships to build and enhance community wide health and wellness within
mind – body – spirit.
The success of Master Liu’s mission to create Chinese Cultural Exchanges through
the promotion Chinese natural healing and Shaolin Kung Fu has been largely at
his personal expense. The financial resources from his teaching tours at
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Office, University of South Alabama, George Washington
University, Spring Hill College, Dow Chemical clinics and other universities and
hospitals provided the financial backing to launch US Open Championships and
Chinese Cultural Festivals.
In 1994 Master Liu launched his first US Open International Martial Arts
Championship with International Sanda competition after he had trained a few
international medal fighters. He became known as the “Father of Sanda in
America.” He has sponsored and managed over 20 US Open Challenges, 7 Arts of
War: Kung Fu Superstar World Fighting Championships and Chinese Cultural
Festivals and 12 US Open International Martial Arts Championships, four of which
were held in Atlanta.

The Shaolin Institute has given scholarships and financial assistance to
thousands of people for the past 20 years. For example, when the entire Gulf
Coast of the United States was suffering from the devastating effects of
hurricane Katrina, under Master Liu’s direction the Institute raised thousands
of dollars for direct assistance and in the following first month alone awarded
300 full scholarships. This enabled hurricane victims to study at his New
Orleans campus to release their mental stress and relieve their emotional pain.
For those truly interested in health and wellness, personal safety and personal
growth, the Shaolin Institute regularly exceeds assisting 500 families with
scholarship funding at each of Master Liu’s campus sites each year.
The decision to donated thousands of dollars to Red Cross and St Jude Children’s
Hospital to help disaster victims and children suffering from devastating
diseases both in China and the US, was made by a true Shaolin Master living his
compassionate heart; I know this to be true. Master Liu and his students have
donated numerous show performances at community festivals, fairs, hospitals and
schools along the gulf coast as well as in the Atlanta area.

As students, we call Master Liu, Shifu. This Chinese term means “Teaching
Father.” I have learned through observation and participation that the impact of
our Teaching Father extends far beyond the wall of our campus sites. It is
likely Shifu’s teaching has touched you personally though the web of life,
especially if you live in a community where we have presence. Our Creed creates
focus and we strive towards a life directed by compassion, loyalty, character,
high moral code, honesty, integrity, courage, modesty, perseverance, courtesy
and the Indomintable Shaolin Spirit.
I am one of the students at the Shaolin Institute. I would like to respond to
our friends who do not know us. I understand your cynical view towards some
schools or “dojo” practices. We are thankful for all the comments and
concerns.

You are right; site visitor friend #5, Master Liu has not set up a medical
clinic in Atlanta. Wushu has nothing to do with medicine. But in reality, the
case may be a bit different from what you described.
Master Liu served internship at People’s Hospital, Department of Orthopedics in
Wushu, Anhui Province; he treated thousands of patients under his intern mentor
( 导师), Doctor Chen Xiao Xi 陈晓羲, the Chief Orthopedic Physician of People’s
Hospital. After graduating from the Chinese Medical School Department of
Orthopedic Medicine in Anhui Province, Master Liu went on to have graduated from
Anhui Normal University and completed his English B.A degree and minor in
psychology and biology at the University of Mobile in Alabama. He finally took a
formal college education break after having graduated with a Master of Science
Degree in Exercise Physiology at the University of South Alabama.

During his career, Master Liu has worked at University of South Alabama Cardiac
Rehab Center and Dow Chemical Clinics, Freeport, TX. Over the past 20 years he
has helped the good people of Mobile and New Orleans with arthritis and spinal
cord health issues, restoring their health through his expertise in Chinese
natural healing therapies such as: Qigong, nutrition, Tai Chi, acupuncture and
acupressure therapy.
